Philadelphia is coming off an embarrassing 36-7 loss at Baltimore as a one-point road underdog. Trailing 10-7 at intermission, Reid did what he’d never done before during McNabb’s 10-year career – bench him.

McNabb had completed only 8-of-18 passes for 59 yards in the first half against the Ravens. Most importantly, he had coughed up a fumble and thrown two interceptions.

Arizona (7-4 SU, 7-4 ATS) is accustomed to the type of turmoil hovering over the City of Brotherly Love, but not during this 2008 campaign in which the Cardinals are running away with the NFC West. Despite last week’s 37-29 loss to the Giants, they maintain a four-game lead in the division.

The decision by second-year head coach Ken Whisenhunt to go with veteran Kurt Warner ahead of Matt Leinart as the starting quarterback has turned into a stroke of genius. Warner is enjoying a banner season, completing 69.4 percent of his passes for 3,506 yards with a 21/8 touchdown-interception ratio.

Reid ended speculation that McNabb could be done playing for the Eagles by announcing that he would get the starting nod Monday morning. However, it’s crystal clear that barring an improbable run by the Eagles to make – and then advance in – the playoffs, McNabb’s days in Philadelphia are numbered at the end of this season.

And the same could be the case for Reid as well.

Philadelphia RB Brian Westbrook has been dealing with several different injuries for much of the season. He has missed a pair of games and was downgraded to “questionable” this week when he missed Tuesday’s practice. Westbrook has 760 yards (rushing and receiving) on 171 “touches” for eight TDs.

He has the NFL’s best 1-2 tandem of wide receivers in Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. Fitzgerald has 72 receptions for 1,010 yards and six touchdowns. Boldin, who missed two games with a broken jaw, has 73 catches for 879 yards and 11 TDs.

In fairness to McNabb, he has dealt with injuries to several of his top weapons. At various points in the season, WRs Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown, in addition to TE L.J. Smith, have missed games.

McNabb has a 14/10 TD-INT ratio this year compared to a 185/89 ratio for his career.

“While we don’t expect McNabb to come out firing and light up the field, we do expect a much improved version who will hold onto the ball and manage his offense properly,” Franks told VI. “Much has been said about Reid benching McNabb, but not enough has been said about how this will affect his supporting cast. Reid’s move no doubt was meant to break down the complacency that has plagued this team recently, and we expect that it will be a successful move. McNabb is too seasoned and has rebounded from too many setbacks to not bounce back again.”

Arizona is 3-3 SU and 4-2 ATS on the road. Meanwhile, Philadelphia is 3-2 both SU and ATS at home.

The ‘over’ is 7-4 overall for Arizona, but the ‘under’ is 4-2 in its road games. The ‘over’ is on a 6-2 run for the Cardinals (regardless of venue). The Eagles have watched the ‘under’ go 6-5 overall, 4-1 in their road assignments.

And so, by laying a horse at a low price, having already backed it at a higher price, you can ensure you will walk away with a profit, before the stalls have even opened!

This process can also be done in reverse, in other words you can lay a bet on a horse to lose, then when its price drifts you can back it to lock in the profit.

Name your price: before the appearance of betting exchanges, when placing a bet on a horse you would have to take the price offered by the bookmaker. If the odds offered on a horse were 2/1 and you said you wanted 3/1 you would be laughed out of the shop. Not so with Betfair. The three different means of betting on horse racing that we are going to look at are standard or traditional betting, spread betting, and Tote betting which is more frequently referred to as betting on the Tote.

I should also mention that recently, matched betting has also risen in popularity but this is perhaps not as common as the other three and that I will cover it in a separate article.

I would advise that if in particular you’re a beginner, that you do not attempt matched betting unless you have a solid grasp of the standard forms of betting on horse racing, otherwise you are only going to get confused and potentially lose money.

Standard Betting Explained

So, the first form of betting that we’ll look at is standard betting. This is still the most popular way of betting on horse racing and the one that most people tend to use when they start out betting. In fact, it’s still the way I continue to bet today.

Simply put, when you place a standard bet, whether its a bet to win (where the horse must win the race for you to win your bet), or an each way bet (where the horse can finish in the first three or four places), the bookmaker lays out their odds for each horse and these are set in stone, that is to say they cannot be negotiated. Odds do fluctuate and change depending on how much money is being placed on the individual horses, but the prices are always determined by the bookmaker.

To place a bet in this fashion, you simply select your horse, see if the odds appeal to you and if they do, you place your bet. Once you have placed this type of bet, as a punter you know exactly what you are going to win (or lose) right from the start, and so most people are comfortable with this type of bet since you can manage your money more effectively, and this is so very important as a punter.

Why Is Spread Betting Different?

Spread betting has become more popular in horse racing in recent years, although it started out as being more popular in sports such as American football, rugby and cricket; sports where there is potentially a large flexibility in the winning margin. It is also a popular method of betting for those who trade the financial markets.

Using this type of betting for horse racing is definitely not for the beginner, nor the faint hearted, as there is generally the possibility that you do not know how much you stand to lose if you’re unfortunate enough to do so.

To explain this as concisely as possible, spread betting on horse racing is taking either the jockey index, winning distance or the distance of places between individual horses, and so involves a fair amount of guessing on the margin, known as ‘the spread’ between them.

It can be a very lucrative way to bet on horse racing, however the problem that I have with spread betting is that you’re never entirely sure exactly how much you stand to lose, and so can quickly run yourself into massive debt without realising it if you are not careful.

It is also a very technical means of betting on horse racing and as I’ve already mentioned, I do not recommend this if you are a novice. In fact I do not entertain spread betting at all I must admit, it just is not for me.

Betting On The Tote

Betting on the Tote, or Tote betting, is a relatively safe way of betting on horse racing as there are low minimum stakes and your losses are controllable.

In Tote betting, all of the monies from the bets placed on individual races are collected into what is called a ‘pool’. After the cost deduction of the bookmaker (The Tote) is deducted, the remaining amount of money is divided out amongst the total amount of winners for that particular horse.

Just like with standard betting, you know exactly how much you stand to lose if your horse does not win the race, but the Tote is also unique in that you may stand to win more than you would through the ‘traditional’ racecourse bookmakers. Depending on how big the pool is for the race and which horse wins, makes it possible to win more than you think you will.

It is also down to the fact that the Tote calculates their prices differently to the traditional bookmakers and is why the Tote is as popular a way of betting on horse racing today as its always been, particularly for the novice because you can bet with very low stakes and so it is ideal if you are just starting out.

“After [Tuesday’s] practice, I was told to game plan with the intent that there’s a chance that Tim could play. That’s all I know,” Florida head coach Urban Meyer told ESPN.

“All the other stuff . . . we’ll make a decision as we get closer.”

NCAA Trends:

The Gators are 3-0 against the spread vs. the LSU Tigers during Tebow’s time in Gainesville and are 11-3 ATS against LSU in their last 14.

Florida is also 6-1 ATS in its last seven games in Louisiana.

NCAA Betting:

The sports betting public is still unsure of which way to go on this one, as the Tebow injury causes uncertainty. Online sportsbook SPORTSBETTING is reporting even betting action, with 54% leaning towards the Gators.

NFL Betting:

Of the five remaining undefeated teams in the NFL, it’s not surprising to see the Indianapolis Colts and New York Giants, somewhat surprising to see the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings and absolutely stunning to see the Denver Broncos.

Denver’s first-year head coach Josh McDaniels was criticized for his treatment of former QB Jay Cutler but four games into the regular season, he has the Broncos at 4-0 SU and ATS.

Denver will be in tough to grab win five this week as they prepare to host McDaniels’ mentor Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.

The Pats are a 3.5-point road faves with a Total of 41.5.

Denver has been quite successful against New England at Mile High going 11-2 straight up and 10-3 ATS and in its last seven home games against the Pats. Over/Under bettors take note, as these “Over” has hit six times in those games.

- Indianapolis will aim to remain undefeated in a Sunday night tilt against the AFC South division rival Tennessee Titans.

The Colts are listed as 4-point road faves with an Over/Under of 45.5.

In the last eight games between the two, the Under has cashed seven times and the Over has paid out only once.

In Indy’s last 10 games in the month of October, they are 8-2 SU and 7-3 ATS while Tennessee has struggled in its last eight games overall, going 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS.

Further calculations will be made by the spread betting company and it will quote the no. of points that they accept all the favorites at a particular meeting to amass.

Although the boy wonder Rooney had the lowest possession of any England player at just 84.5 seconds, he looks ready to start scoring. With his Goal Minutes priced up at 14 to 17, you’d expect to see plenty of punters betting high at 17 minutes. Lampard may have missed an impressive 18 shots so far, but he’s doing something right to have had so many goes and England’s top scorer in the qualifiers has got to get lucky sooner or later; he is available at 11 to 14 minutes. Even though Pauleta has been quiet by his standards (many tipped him for the Golden Boot), his spread of 10 to 13 also looks tempting.

In part one of this article series, I covered the basics about betting on horses with betting exchanges and showed why they have become so popular with punters.

I also went through three key reasons why you should use betting exchanges, whether you’re using a horse racing tipster service or backing your own judgment of the horses. You may have a friend giving you racing tips on the sly (and for free) or you may be using some of the many horse racing systems that are out there.

However you are selecting your horses, betting with betting exchanges is certainly something that you should be doing.

And so in this article, I will explain some of the more technical and detailed facets of using a betting exchange, that could enable you to profit even more from your horse racing exploits.

And when I use words like technical and detailed, you’ll be pleased to hear that I do not mean complicated. So let’s crack on and look at these four key elements that could enable you to make more profit from horse racing.

Reason One – Get Prices For Horses 24 Hours A Day

I don’t know about you, but one of the real frustrations I have as a punter is reading the newspaper or hearing on the television of a good early price for a horse, yet when you go on the internet to check, prices are not always available.

And of course there is not a bookie in the land that opens there doors at 7am, so that avenue is blocked off as well.

With a betting exchange however, you can place a bet whenever you want. This enables you to take advantage of the often advantageous early prices of horses, long before everyone else starts lumping their cash on, leading to the price coming down.

Some of my members actually place their bets as soon as I advise them in the morning, meaning that they can take the best priced odds available, or indeed as I mentioned in the previous article, by naming their own price to see if it gets matched.

Reason Two – No Limit On Betting Stakes

How frustrated would you be if you’d received information from your horse racing tipster, about a gem of a horse that was over valued in price and likely to win its race, only to discover that putting a substantial bet on at 20/1 was out of the question?

Well, it can and does happen. More so in the local high street bookies, where you may be given the option to have some of the bet at 20/1 and some of the bet at the Starting Price – which is likely to be far lower come race time.

By betting on horse racing using an exchange, this does not happen. If you place a request to back a horse for a large sum at 20/1 and another punter is willing to lay the bet at that price, then you are able to have your bet placed without any questions being asked

Reason Three – The Race Has Started, But You Can Still Place Your Bet.

If you’ve ever got to the bookies just as a race is about to start, only to be told by the ‘friendly’ assistant behind the desk that you’re too late to place your bet, then you’ll like this one.

Betting exchanges actually allow you to continue placing bets on horses in a race, even after the race has started. This is something that is both new and requires nerves of steel, as while the race is still going, the betting market for each horse is constantly changing as each horse jostles for position in the race.

Of course, in the longer races, say a two mile hurdle race, there is a little more time to think, but in a five furlong sprint race you do not have much time at all, in fact most races are over in 60 seconds or less!

I must admit that this is not something that I myself do, as it is simply too risky for my betting philosophy, however there are plenty that do like the excitement of it, and profit from it.

Reason Four – Trading Your Bets To Secure Yourself A Profit

I’ve deliberately left this one until last, as it is a kind of an underground betting tactic if you like, although it is now growing in popularity. It’s a tactic often used by traders who play the financial markets, but it can be used for betting on horse racing as well, and can guarantee you a profit on a given race.

Guarantee a profit I hear you say, never. Well, let me explain:

Imagine that you’ve chosen to back a horse at 5/1 in a race. You think the price will shorten come race time, and so you’ve done the right thing and taken the early price. Having secured your early price of 5/1, you place your bet of £50 on the horse.

As race time approaches, you notice that the price of your horse has come in from the 5/1 that you backed it at, to a price of 2/1. Due to the drop in price, you could also decide to lay the horse to lose and place £75 on that bet.

So, how are you guaranteeing a profit by doing this? Well, there are of course only two possible outcomes for the horse that you’ve selected -it will either win the race or it will not.

If your horse wins its race, your winning bet will profit you £250 (£50 at a price of 5/1) but your lay bet was not successful and so you will pay out £75 for this. Therefore your total profit is £250 less £75, which is £175.

However, if your horse loses it race, your lay bet will profit you £150 (£75 at a price of 2/1) but your ‘to win’ bet was not successful and so you will pay out £50 for this. Therefore your total profit is £150 less £50, which is £100.

So there you have it, it is possible to guarantee that you make a profit in a race, if you are able to back the horse at one price and lay it at another (lower) price. This can also be done in reverse too, so you could lay a horse to begin with, and if its price drifts out (increases) then you can guarantee profits by backing the horse at the higher price.

So this concludes part two, the final part of this article series regarding betting on horses using the betting exchanges. As you can see, there really is no mystique surrounding them and I highly recommend that you give them a go.
